37: The Advantage You're Not Using in Dentistry - Dr. Mark Hyman

What if there were a simple way to grow your practice that you just may not be using? We talk about that advantage today with Dr. Mark Hyman. Who is one of the best dental speakers and communicators that I know. After purchasing his first practice, Mark realized that there is more to dentistry than fixing teeth. He shares great tips including the importance of building relationships, learning to listen, building and valuing your team, and his love of being a lifelong learner.

He is also a much sought after public speaker who has lectured at every major dental meeting. Dentistry Today Magazine even selected him as one of the top speakers in dentistry. He is a knowledgeable and experienced dentist and an expert communicator. He has mastered the art of listening and finding the right questions to ask his patients. [02:48] Dr. Mark Hyman is a dentist from Greensboro, North Carolina.  


[03:17] He finished dental school in 3 1/2 years.  


[04:08] He worked as a volunteer dentist in Israel for four months. Where he also met his wife of 32 years. 


[04:51] He then did a residency in almost every type of dentistry. After which, he bought his own practice. 


[05:34] When he first started his practicing, he made every mistake in the book. Then he went to a Linda Miles seminar and his practice began to double.[Text Wrapping Break][07:29] The time Dr. Hyman spent at the Pankey Institute and Spear Education was very impactful for his career. 


[07:48] A Carnegie class is one of the most unbelievable impactful things that a person can do. 


[09:23] Dr. Hyman went to the Pankey Institute until he was actually offered an opportunity to teach there. 


[11:09] The lost art of listening. Dr. Hyman asks his patients why they left their last dentist. 


[14:39] The importance of asking open-ended questions. 


[17:03] With great restorative dentists, the highest producers asked the most questions. 


[19:11] You can’t have a great practice without relationship training. We buy from people we know like and trust. 


[20:56] How far you get in dentistry really depends on how well you develop yourself and your team. 


[21:19] Using the preclinical coordination and consultation. Every new patient sits down with the doctor and the treatment coordinator. 


[23:00] Dr. Hyman bought four versions of the Digital DOC camera. Having the cameras will increase your revenue. 


[24:42] They take 12 pictures in two minutes. The photos are imperative for the treatment plan. 


[28:09] How master communicators answer questions with questions.  


[28:37] Answering a question with a question hits people in their heart. 


[32:47] Starting with the question tell me more and lovingly aligning your values to create the practice you want. 


[33:29] Asking simple questions to start a conversation. You can even ask if you had any trouble finding office. 


[34:43] The importance of knowing the questions and having the confidence to just listen. 


[35:42] The importance of not being attached to an outcome. Get good at the questions first. 


[38:15] How liberating it is to be able to practice debt-free. 


[39:35] Having a comprehensive examination and getting all of the patients information to give a complete and comprehensive diagnosis. 


[39:52] Giving the patient permission to say you can do some of it, all of it, or none of it. 


[41:12] The top gun team and getting your team to understand the importance of giving great care. 


[41:23] Part of getting your team on board is hiring people who are smarter than you and training them well. 


[42:03] Dr. Hyman will pay for any continuing education course his team wants to take. He also believes in the importance of getting out of their way and letting them do the work. 


[42:47] As a doctor, we have an opportunity to enhance these people's lives. They will be happier at work and at home. 


[43:08] Looking at the team as an investment not a cost. 


[47:36] At Dr. Hyman's office they do three hours of training every Tuesday afternoon. 


[49:20] Advice for young dentists. A picture of every patient and procedure. Put an emphasis on continuing education and learning outside of dentistry. 


[50:33] Keep in mind that you're never done learning. 


[51:29] The importance of being a continuous student and being humble.
